The SMARTdrill 6.0 measures depth in real time, enabling surgeons to detect impending cortical and joint penetration at varied skive angles without the routine use of fluoroscopy. For the first time ever, an autoclavable drill can communicate data wirelessly during surgery. The SMARTdrill’s patented, autoclavable Bluetooth® technology enables it to transmit bone data in real time to the Tablet.

System Components



The SMARTdrill 6.0 is comprised of two motors. The first motor is for the spindle. Attached to the spindle are torque sensors that provide drilling energy information. The second motor is for the control harp. This motor controls the feed rate of the drill and is what provides the SMARTdrill’s unmatched level of depth control and measurement.


The upper trigger is for the control harp and the lower trigger is for the spindle. SMARTdrill also has two buttons on the top of the drill that communicate with the Tablet. The Home button returns the control harp to the zero position and adds a new, blank graph to the screen allowing the surgeon to quickly drill consecutive holes without touching the screen. The Next button adds a new, blank graph to the screen, but leaves the control harp in position. This is useful for placing consecutive screws without touching the screen.

Data Display

The SMARTdrill Tablet is where all the data that the drill produces is displayed in real-time. The Tablet displays and stores drilling energy and hole depth data for up to 100 holes per session.


SMARTdrill proprietary software allows for granular control of every aspect of the drilling experience. The surgeon can customize settings like drill bit diameter, spindle RPM, and feed rate to best fit their preferences and procedure.


The Tablet provides three different modes in which the surgeon can work. Two drilling modes, Diagnostic and Variable Depth Control (VDC), and Driver mode. When driver mode is selected, the tablet automatically adjusts the spindle speed to 120 RPM and changes the graph to torque vs. time so the surgeon can see the torque of the screw as it is driven into the bone in real time.

Built-in soft tissue protection frees surgeons to operate the SMARTdrill with one hand. A variety of soft tissue protectors are available for various applications.

The Harp is connected to the secondary motor of the drill and integrates soft tissue retraction and protection into its primary depth control function.

The spindle motor maintains a specific speed, set by the surgeon before drilling. This eliminates the human variable involved in controlling variable speed triggers, allowing surgeons to set the drill to the ideal RPM for the drill bit they are using.

The harp motor provides a constant feed rate, removing human variables like shoulder strength, fatigue, etc., and allowing for continuous depth control.

The spindle motor is connected to torque sensors that help provide drilling energy data. Combined with the constant feed rate the harp motor provides, these sensors allow SMARTdrill technology to map the cross section of bone as it is being drilled.

This is a non-variable speed trigger that initiates spindle rotation at the speed selected by the surgeon on the Tablet.

When pressed, the Home button returns the Harp to its starting position and adds a new, blank entry into the Hole Data section of the Tablet. This allows for rapid drilling of multiple holes.

When pressed, the Next button adds a new, blank entry into the Hole Data section of the Tablet but leaves the harp in its current position. This is useful for placing multiple screws, when the harp is not being used.
