Dilemma – To Plunge or Not to Plunge?

Today’s orthopedic surgeons are faced with the dilemma of plunging when they apply the proper pressure upon the drill bit so that it will cut efficiently, or to let up on the drill bit so that it will not plunge as far past the distal cortex, which leads to reduced cutting efficiency and increased thermal injury to the bone. Unfortunately, if your not cutting bone under force the drill bit is simply turning and burning the bone. The antiquated drills used in operating rooms around the world leave the surgeon in this delicate balance between plunging or increasing thermal injury.
